Crossing: Eris / Eris — Discord Names Discord

The goddess of strife named for causing the Trojan War. The dwarf planet named for causing the demotion of Pluto. The most on-the-nose name in the solar system.

The Sky Object

Eris is the most massive known dwarf planet in the solar system, discovered in 2005 by Mike Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David Rabinowitz at Palomar Observatory. It orbits in the scattered disc at 38–97 AU — further from the Sun than anything else in the classical solar system, taking 559 years to complete one orbit. Its single known moon, Dysnomia, is named after the goddess of lawlessness, Eris's daughter.

At discovery, Eris appeared to be slightly larger than Pluto (later measurements made them nearly equal in size). This created the immediate problem: if Pluto was a planet, so was Eris. And there were other Pluto-scale objects in the Kuiper Belt. The International Astronomical Union had a choice — accept that the solar system had ten or more planets, or redefine what a planet is.

In 2006, the IAU voted to create the category of "dwarf planet." Pluto was demoted. Eris, its discoverer, triggered the most contentious reclassification debate in modern astronomy.

The Name Choice

Brown's team initially nicknamed the object "Xena" (after the TV warrior princess), with the moon nicknamed "Gabrielle." When it came time for an official name, the mythology logic was clear: this body had caused maximum discord in planetary science. The name *Eris* — goddess of discord and strife — was the obvious choice.

The IAU accepted it in September 2006, immediately after the vote that demoted Pluto. The timing was almost comic: the object named Discord, having caused discord, received its name at the meeting where its discord-causing consequences were formalised.

The Resonance

The Eris myth turns on a structural pattern: an uninvited force introduces a condition for conflict, and the existing order destroys itself responding to it.

  • Eris the goddess: threw one apple at a wedding she wasn't invited to; ten years of war followed; Troy fell
  • Eris the dwarf planet: turned up uninvited in the outer solar system larger than Pluto; three years of debate followed; the planet category was restructured

Neither Eris does the fighting. Both introduce the seed. In both cases, the established order — the Olympian pecking order, the planetary hierarchy — is revealed to be more fragile than it appeared.

The goddess forced a judgment that Olympus couldn't make without destroying something. The dwarf planet forced a classification that astronomy couldn't make without demoting something.

Dysnomia (lawlessness) orbits Eris. The moon name continues the pattern: chaos attended by the breakdown of orderly rule.

Crossing Type

This is deliberate — Brown's team consciously chose the name for the resonance. Unlike some crossings where the fit emerges accidentally or is noticed retrospectively, the Eris naming was an act of intentional mythological alignment. The discoverer understood what the object had done and named it accordingly.

This makes the Eris/Eris crossing the most self-aware deliberate crossing in the vault: the namers knew the myth, appreciated the irony, and reached for it.
