feelings toward and from the tools — phylum II
A modern genus. Species describe the affective relationship between a practitioner and their instruments — editors, languages, build systems, linters. Known to ancient craftsmen but not previously catalogued at this resolution.
the steady affection
The affection for a tool that works. The twenty-year text editor. The knife. Low-grade, steady, only noticed when the tool breaks. Closely related to the fondness for a good pen.
the update grief
The small betrayal of an update. The interface moved. The shortcut is gone. A grief disproportionate to the loss, because what was lost was fluency — a year's worth of muscle memory invalidated overnight.
the animist suspicion
The suspicion that the build system is being passive-aggressive today. Known to be false. Felt anyway. Characteristic of long sessions and insufficient sleep.
the orphaned authorship
Opening a project from three years ago and not recognizing your own code. A specific vertigo: authorship without recognition. The git blame insists it was you.
the linter's flinch
The small flinch when the linter is right about something you thought was clever. Worse when the linter is a junior colleague's PR review. Resolves only by revising the code.
