species of paying-attention — phylum III
Attention is a posture, not a beam. Species in this genus differ by shape (narrow vs. wide), effort (strained vs. loose), and direction (outward vs. recursive). Each is useful for different things; none is the default.
the hard look
Sustained, narrowed, effortful. The close reading, the diagnostic squint, the hunter's scan. Fatigues quickly. Not the default state of any mind.
the soft attention
Wide, low-effort, receptive. The birdwatcher's readiness, the listener's open posture. Often more productive than the hard look for problems that won't yield to force.
Kin. Locothymia balnei
the split attention
The new parent's attention, one ear always tuned to the baby monitor. The attention of anyone waiting for a text while doing something else. A posture of incomplete presence to whatever is in front of you.
the hypervigilant scan
Searching for threat, in rooms where there isn't any. A posture that is adaptive in some contexts and corrosive over time. Difficult to lay down once it has been picked up.
Kin. Vertigo scalarum
the drowsy attention
The listener half-asleep on the couch during the podcast, catching every third sentence. Strangely retentive; some things only land when the critical filter is off.
the attention that watches itself
Reading a paragraph and then re-reading it because you want to see how you were reading it. Metacognitive, recursive, and a known dead-end when pursued too long.
